Our Values.

What the lien list does is it gives tools to third-party investors to dismantle wealth-building from people of color in the city.” Jan Lee, owner of two rent-stabilized properties in Chinatown, NYC.

Wealth creation.

Homeownership is still recognized as the leading indicator of wealth creation in the US. A 2019 Survey of Consumer Finances, indicates that the median homeowner has 40 times the household wealth of a renter – $254,900 for the former compared to $6,270 for the latter. These figures underscore the magnitude of losses incurred by families who experience foreclosure, particularly as a result of tax liens.

Family.

“It is easier to raise strong children than to repair broken men” Frederick Douglass
Tax lien foreclosures have a devastating impact on our communities and particularly on black families: loss of generational wealth, loss of the family’s social fabric, disruption in the lives of the children and their education, potential behavioral and mental health issues, future burden on public welfare, etc.

Equity.

Tax liens are amongst the most predatory systems of structural inequity, one that legally transfers wealth from the poor to the wealthy. It is also a leading cause of displacement and gentrification in predominantly black cities.
